The Importance of your Indoor Air Quality

Today we are faced with a myriad of contaminants to our world’s environment. Sometimes we can feel as if it is out of our control but we can control the air environment within in our own homes. The Texas department of State health Services states that air inside of homes and buildings can be two to five times more polluted that the outdoor air and in some cases (older buildings/homes) even 1,000 times worse!

Compared to 20 years ago Americans spend 90% of their time indoors, whether it is in a building or their own home. Thusly being exposed to concentrated amounts of pollutants.

You may be asking yourself what type of pollutants are effecting my Indoor Air Quality? Well pollutant sources are generated from building materials, furnishings made from pressed wood, asbestos containing insulation, wet or damp carpet, biologicals such as mold and mildew, products for household cleaning, personal care, hobbies, central heating and cooling systems and humidification devices, pesticides, oil, gas, kerosene, or wood combustion sources. Inadequate ventilation can increase indoor air pollution levels by not bringing in enough outdoor air to dilute the emissions from indoor sources and by not carrying indoor air pollutants out of the home, high temperatures and humidity levels can also increase concentrations of some pollutants. And here in Houston we are not deficit of humidity and heat, to put it lightly.

What is considered poor ventilation as it relates to indoor air quality?

Apparently in the 1970’s a change in home structure after the energy crisis caused air tight homes to prevent air escaping consequently also all the contaminated air cannot escape. The problem is that is there is no ventilation and mixing of outdoor air it can also pose health risks and discomfort.

Health effects

Symptoms that can occur from poor indoor air quality are irritation of the eyes, nose, throat, headaches, and dizziness, fatigue, and allergy type symptoms: These are known to be short term affects and can dissipate once removed from the source. More serious affect can be asthma, hypersensitivity pneumonitis and humidifier fever or aggravation of existing respiratory illnesses. The likelihood of immediate reactions to indoor air pollutants depend on several factors, according to the EPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency) “Age and preexisting medical conditions are two important influences. In other cases whether a person reacts to pollutants depends on individual sensitivity, which varies tremendously from person to person. Some people can become sensitized to biological pollutants after repeated exposures, and it appears that some people can become sensitized to chemical pollutants as well.”

The people more at risk are children, babies, the elderly, those with weak immune systems due to HIV or cancer, heart related diseases or medical conditions and with preexisting respiratory illnesses.

Long term effects can show up years after concentrated exposure has occurred these can be respiratory diseases, heart disease and even cancer. Therefore the importance of indoor air quality is something that must be taken in serious manner and the right steps must be taken for the benefits of our families, ourselves or our employees.

Indoor Air Quality Testing and Common Biological Contaminates in Sugarland

Mold and Mildew is a rampant contaminant in Texas, mainly of two reason high heats and humidity rates. Molds are usually found in areas of moisture. Common areas are drywall, ceiling tiles, carpets (that have been water damaged and not properly dry or located in restrooms), areas around plumbing pipes, air ducts/ air handlers, and attic insulation, baseboard near tubs or toilets and walls near kitchen areas.

Mold spores can enter the home through open areas, windows and even travel in on clothing, shoes, children and pets. Molds reproduce by forming tiny spores that are not visible to the naked eye. Mold spores are very hardy and can survive under conditions in which mold cannot grow, such as in dry and harsh environments. These spores travel through outdoor and indoor air. When the mold spores land on a surface where moisture is present, mold can then start to grow.

What is mold?

According to an article written by Melissa Conrad Stoppler, MD a US board certified Anatomic Pathologist with training in the fields of Experimental and Molecular Pathology, “Molds are various types of fungi that grow in filaments and reproduce by forming spores. The term “mildew” is sometimes used to refer to some kinds of mold, particularly mold in the household with a white or grayish color or mold growing in shower stalls and bathrooms. Mold may grow indoors or outdoors and thrives in damp, warm, and humid environments. Mold can be found in essentially any environment or season.

The most common types of household mold that are found indoors include: Cladosporium, Penicillium, Alternaria, and Aspergillus. Stachybotrys chartarum (also known as Stachybotrys atra and sometimes referred to as “black mold”) is a greenish-black mold that can also be found indoors. Stachybotrys grows on household surfaces that have high cellulose content, such as wood, fiberboard, gypsum board, paper, dust, and lint. There are types of mold that can grow on substances as different as foods and carpet.

Mold has adverse effects to indoor air quality & to the human body if exposed in long time periods. The Institute Of Medicine published in 2004 that there was sufficient enough link between indoor mold exposure to respiratory illness development, allergies, and skin rashes in healthy people as well as aggravation of preexisting respiratory conditions. Furthermore, it has been linked to aggressive asthma symptoms and flare ups and hypersensitivity pneumonia development. “Damp Indoor Spaces and Health.” Institute of Medicine. May 25, 2004.

After browsing for air-duct cleaning companies, I have found the best reviewed company was “TakeAir” and decided to use their services for cleaning up my air-duct and A/C. Their technician was very patient and professional, he explained me about the the cleaning impact, process and solution and after he was done I could immediately point out the differences; There was less dust, air was fresh and clean. I am very happy about my choice of using “TakeAir” services and will definitely use their other services in the futures. Thank you for an amazing experience!

"I had a very good experience with those guys. Since my first call to them I had a feeling that I’m talking with professionals and reliable peoples. They replace all the ducts in my house and did a very good and clean job. They also explain me everything about what are the gonna do, how and show me a picture of the mold I had there. I checked on google if what they told me is true (like I do with every service I ask) and apparently the said the true and did the job in a very fair price compare to other companies I had called to. I was very satisfy from their job and I’m sure I’ll call only them for more job I’ll be need and recommend them for my friends and family."
